Recent international public health alerts (eg, influenza pandemic) and increased trade of animals and animal products have revealed the need to enhance the capacity of national veterinary services worldwide. Training in new laboratory procedures and epidemiologic methods and techniques are in high demand to formulate enhanced surveillance and response systems to mitigate the consequences of emerging pathogens in human and animal populations.

Dr. Jorge Hernandez is actively involved in capacity building and training effort is animal health in Latin America and the Caribbean in collaboration with USDA Foreign Agricultural Services, USDA APHIS International Services, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture, French Agricultural Research Center for Development in Guadeloupe, Colorado State University: Animal Population Health Institute, and the University of Yucatan in Mexico.

The University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine Epidemiology Office in collaboration with the University of Florida Global Pathogens Laboratory offer training laboratory diagnosis, surveillance and epidemiology of emerging pathogens in animal populations.
